Liner Notes
MARVA WHITNEY BETTER KNOWN TO MANY AS "MARVELOUS MARVA" AND GIVEN THE TITLE WHICH SHE SO GREATLY EARNED AS THE MOST PROMISING VOCALIST FOR 1969-1970, IS, AS THE ALBUM TITLE IMPLIES, LIVE AND LOWDOWN AT THE APOLLO THEATRE IN HER OWN WAY. MARVA HAS, FOR SOMETIME, SINCE HER TEAM-UP WITH JAMES (SOUL BROTHER NO. 1) BROWN, BEEN ON THE RISE TO WHAT SHE IS BECOMING NOW A POLISHED STAR AND SUCCESSFUL SINGER. THE FAME, THE TALENT AND THE WILL TO ACHIEVE COULD BE EXPECTED. AS MARVA PUTS IT, AND I QUOTE, "I PREFER A SONG WITH GOOD LYRICS THAT HAVE A MESSAGE. TAKE THE TUNE, 'RESPECT'. . . ONE HAS TO HAVE RESPECT FOR THE OTHER." "SOME SONGS", MARVA OBSERVES, "TELL PEOPLE WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW, LIKE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO 'HAVE A JOB.'" 'THINGS HAVE GOT TO GET BETTER' SAYS THIS FOR NOT ONLY MARVA BUT ALL OF HER LISTENERS. PERFORMING AT THE APOLLO WAS A CHALLENGE AS WELL AS A THRILL FOR MARVA. SHE WAS GIVEN A SPONTANEOUS OVATION BY HER AUDIENCE WHEN SHE SO ROUSINGLY PERFORMED "IT'S MY THING." MARVA WHITNEY'S FIRST FEW NOTES WILL IMMEDIATELY TELL YOU INTO WHAT CAMP SHE FALLS. IT'S ALWAYS PLEASANT TO HEAR A GOOD VOICE AND HERS, WITH ITS LIVELY INDIVIDUALITY, ASSUREDLY COMMANDS YOUR ATTENTION. TO SUM UP MARVA'S STYLE IS DIFFICULT, BUT A LISTING OF WHAT MAKES HER UNIQUE IS PERHAPS EASIER. IN THE MEANTIME TURN YOUR TURNTABLE OVER TO MARVA WHITNEY AND BE TANTALIZED BY HER WAY WITH THIS COLLECTION OF GREAT SOUL HITS SHE SO EXCITINGLY PERFORMED AT THE APOLLO THEATRE, LIVE AND LOWDOWN.
