Description
*Insanity...fuzz guitar over a hell-bent uptempo shuffle beat, dueling with a Hammond player that's also trying to keep up with Bo's wailing...sounds like a dirty version of Booker T & the MGs...or even The Blues Explosion... includes a soulful version of "Hey Bo Diddley"...

Liner Notes
IT'S BEEN ABOUT THREE YEARS SINCE BO DIDDLEY LOPED INTO A STUDIO, PULLED OUT HIS STRINGED AXE, AND PROCEEDED TO WAIL. IT PROBABLY TOOK THREE YEARS TO MUSTER UP THE MUSICAL ENERGY TO PRODUCE "BO DIDDLEY: THE BLACK GLADIATOR," BUT TO BO'S FANS, IT WAS WELL WORTH THE WAIT. FOR HEREIN ARE TEN TUNES WHICH COULD STAND ALONE AS SMASH HITS, BUT WHEN TOGETHER PAINT A PICTURE OF ONE OF THE MOST PHENOMENAL TALENTS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. AS A MATTER OF FACT, BO'S TALENTS CAN BE HEARD IN MANY OF TODAY'S "WITH IT" GROUPS WHO MUST ADMIT THAT THEIR MAIN INSPIRATION CAME FROM BO"THE ORIGINATOR." TO THE UNINITIATED, THIS ALBUM COULD SERVE AS A SAMPLER OF BO'S WIDE TALENT, AMPLY DISPLAYED ON AN EQUALLY WIDE RANGE OF TOP CHOICE MATERIAL. IF YOUR BLUES MUST COME FROM THE DEEPEST REACHES OF BO'S OWN PATENTED GUT-BUCKET, THEN THERE'S "POWER HOUSE," "SHUT UP, WOMAN," (A GREAT "TALKING" BLUES TUNE) AND A SONG WHICH DEFIES THE GUTBUCKET TAG ONLY, "BLACK SOUL." IF YOUR TASTE LEANS TOWARDS A SLIGHTLY MORE UP-TEMPO OFFERING, THEN "HOT BUTTERED BLUES" AND "I'VE GOT A FEELING" WILL FIT NEATLY INTO YOUR BAG. IF, LIKE ME, YOU GET A KICK COLLECTING BO'S "PERSONAL" TUNES, THEN YOU'LL FLIP BEHIND "YOU, BO DIDDLEY." THEN, IF YOU LAUGH UNTIL YOUR STOMACH HURTS, YOU'D BETTER INGEST SOME ASPIRIN BEFORE YOU PAY TOO MUCH ATTENTION TO "I DON'T LIKE YOU," IN WHICH BO USES HIS BEST OPERATIC VOICE TO PLAY THE DOZENS WITH HIS IRATE WOMAN. I PREDICT THAT BO'S "FUNKY FLY" WILL NOT ONLY BE A SMASH IN ITS OWN RIGHT, BUT WILL PROBABLY SPAWN A NATIONAL DANCE CRAZE AS WELL. AND WHAT MANNER OF MAN IS BO DIDDLEY? FIRSTLY, HE WAS BORN ELIAS MCDANIEL IN MACOMB, MISS. ORIGINALLY HE STUDIED CLASSICS ON THE VIOLIN. WHEN HE REACHED THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 17, HE SWITCHED TO GUITAR. IN JUNE, 1955, HE AND TWO SIDEMEN AUDITIONED FOR PHIL AND THE LATE LEONARD CHESS. PLEASANTLY ENOUGH, THE REST IS HISTORY. HISTORY LESSON ONE WAS HIS FIRST RECORD "BO DIDDLEY," A SUPERSMASH. OTHERS FOLLOWED: "HEY, BO DIDDLEY," "ROAD RUNNER," "BO DIDDLEY'S A GUNSLINGER," "YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER," AND "SAY MAN." MORE HITS ARE ON THE WAY. IN FACT, THEY'RE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. THEY'RE IN THE ALBUM YOU'RE HOLDING. DAVE POTTER CHICAGO DAILY DEFENDER
