Liner Notes
BIG BILL AT THE EARLY AGE OF 10 WAS PERFORMING IN THE STREETS AND APPEARING AT PICNICS AND OTHER GATHERINGS USING A VIOLIN CONSTRUCTED FROM CIGAR-BOXES. WHEN HE FINALLY OBTAINED A SIX-STRING GUITAR IT DIDN'T TAKE HIM LONG TO MASTER THE NEW INSTRUMENT. BY 1926 HE WAS RECORDING AS A SINGER. HIS VOCAL IZING ALONG WITH HIS GUITARSOON BUILT HIM A WIDE REPUTATION IN THE SOUTH THAT SPREAD TO CHICAGO WHERE HE FINALLY SETTLED. TODAY, BIG BILL IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MAJOR NEGRO MUSICAL FOLKLORE PERSONALITIES, HAVING DEVOTED MOST OF HIS LIFE AS A TRAVELING TROUBADOR - WORKING AS A MINER, ON THE RAILROADS, ON THE MISSISSIPPI DIKES, IN SOUTHERN WORKING CAMPS, AND OCCASIONAL CONCERTS. HIS REPUTATION DEVELOPED TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT HE VISITED EUROPE IN 1950. THIS ALBUM WAS RECORDED IN 1951 AND 1952 WHEN BIG BILL WAS IN PARIS. IT FEATURES BLUES, SPIRITUALS AND WORK SONGS. THE BLUES REFLECT THE EVERYDAY LIFE'OF THE NEGRO. WITH "LOUISE," "KIND HEARTED BLUES," "BABY PLEASE DON'T GO", AND "LETTER TO MY BABY," BIG BILL -SINGS OF LOVE. WITH "DO RIGHT BLUES" HE WONDERS HOW SOMEONE COULD BE MISTREATED. AS CHARLIE CHAPLIN DID IN SOME OF HIS EARLY FILMS, BIG BILL CRIES IN "LONESOME ROAD BLUES." IN "HEY! BUD BLUES" HE TELLS SOME ANECDOTES FROM NEGRO COUNTRY FOLKLORE, WHILE "THE MOPPIN' BLUES" IS DERIVED FROM A WORK SONG. SPIRITUALS ARE A PART OF NEGRO TRADITION AND ARE FEATURED IN THIS ALBUM WITH "DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE" AND "STAND YOUR TEST IN JUDGMENT" WHILE "JOHN HENRY" IS ANOTHER WELLKNOWN WORK SONG DEDICATED TO THE LEGENDARY NEGRO OF THE 19TH CENTURY WHO WAS KNOWN FOR WORKING FASTER AND BETTER THAN ANY MACHINE. THE DEEP BEAUTY AND SPONTANEITY OF THESE NUMBERS IS MOSTLY DUE TO BIG BILL'S EXPRESSIVE VOICE AS WELL AS TO THE RICH ACCOMPANIMENT HE PROVIDES WITH HIS GUITAR. THE SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE OF ROCK AND ROLL WITH THE BLUES BEGINS WITH AN EARTHY SOUL TALENT LIKE BIG BILL BROONZY. THE BIG BILL BROONZY TECHNIQUE OF TELLING A STORY OR DELIVERING A BLUES SONG CAN BE WARM OR TENDER OR COMICAL DEPENDING ON THE MATERIAL AND THE MOOD. SCEPTER IS AGAIN PROUD TO BRING YOU ANOTHER IN THE EVER-GROWING SERIES OF ALBUMS FEATURING EXCEPTIONAL TALENT IN THE FIELDS OF ROCK AND ROLL, BLUES, SPIRITUALS, TRADITIONAL AMERICAN WORK SONGS AND JAZZ. THIS ALBUM IS AN AUTHENTIC AND SINCERE PERFORMANCE OF THAT FASCINATING ART FORM COMBINING POPULAR POETRY AND MUSIC WHICH THE NEGROES HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO OUR TIME AND MUSICAL HERITAGE. WILDMAN STEVE W.A.M.E. MIAMI, FLORIDA
