Description

This was the last of three examples of the work of one of the best early editions of the Jazz Messengers that were recorded for Riverside between 1962 and '64. This album, although no date is listed, was made at a February 20, 1964 session. An incredible number of individual proteges of Art Blakey have gone on to stardom just to use trumpeters as an example, try Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Chuck Mangione, Woody Shaw, Wynton Marsalis and, from this unit, Freddie Hubbard But it would be hard to top the total combined relaxed potential of the Messengers heard here, which in addition to Hubbard includes Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Curtis Fuller. OJC 145 Riverside 9493. This same Blakey band can be heard on OJC 38 Caravan and OJC 90 Ugetsu. Art Blakey with Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman, Wellington Blakey.
