Liner Notes
IDEOLOGICAL DEVOTEES OF THE COMTE DE TOCQUEVILLE CAN SMILE WITH KNOWINGNESS AS 135 YEARS AGO HE OBSERVED IN HIS CRITIQUE OF AMERICAN LIFE THAT AMERICA WAS DESTINED TO FUNCTION AS THE CREATOR AND MASS-ACCEPTOR OF MASS CULTURE. WHETHER ONE IS AN ARTIST IN THE PERFORMING ARTS IN THE TRADITIONAL "HIGH CULTURE", THE MARKETABLE "MASS CULTURE" OR THE "HOMOGENIZED CULTURE", THE COMMODITY OF ENTHUSIASM IS A VITAL ONE. WARM ENTHUSIASM ALSO REPRESENTS A DYNAMIC STRATUM OF THE ABSTRACT ARTIST AND THE GESTALT OF MAN. LES MCCANN LIKE SO MANY OF HIS FELLOW MUSICIANS IN TODAY'S JAZZ WORLD MUST WRESTLE WITH THE IMPOSING FORCES OF "POPULAR" OR "MASS CULTURE". PIANIST MCCANN EMITS ENTHUSLASM AND ABUNDANT, GENUINE FEELING FOR BASKETBALL, PEOPLE, FOOD AND MUSIC . . . JAZZ, POP OR MERGED FORMS LIKE BOOGALOO. HERE ARE EXCERPTS OF MY TAPED CONFERENCE WITH MCCANN CONCERNING THIS ALBUM. Q. LES, HOW DID THE CONCEPT OF THIS BOOGALOO ALBUM EVOLVE? A. WELL, LIMELIGHT A&R MAN JERRY ROSS WAS TELLING ME ABOUT THE MOST POPULAR RECORDS IN NEW YORK, AND IT WAS MOSTLY THE BOOGALOO TYPE OF THING. BOOGALOO HAD SPREAD ITS IMPACT TO OTHER MAJOR AREAS ALREADY SO WE DECIDED TO BASE AN LP ON LATIN BOOGALOO. Q. CAN YOU OFFER A QUICK RESUME OF LATIN BOOGALOO? A. IT IS SIMPLY A BIG DANCE CRAZE IN NYC THAT THE LATIN CATS HAVE COME OUT WITH SONGS TO FIT THE DANCE. Q. YOU'VE BEEN A HEAVY PURVEYOR OF GOSPEL OR FUNKY MATERIAL. HAVE YOU INJECTED YOUR BAG INTO COOKING THE BOOGALOO? A. OH, YES! IT'S IN THE BOOGALOO! BOOGALOO IS CHITLINS AND GRAVY TOO WITH A LITTLE JERK TO IT! Q. THERE'S A REAL FESTIVE PARTY GROOVE ON THIS SESSION. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THIS? A. YEAH, THE FEELING IS THERE, BABY. WE SOCKED IT TO LEM. WE HAD BEEN PLAYING AT THE LIGHTHOUSE AND EACH NIGHT WE OPENLY INVITED EVERYONE TO ATTEND THE RECORDING SESSION. WE FINISHED OUR LIGHTHOUSE GIG ON CHRISTMAS EVE AND RECORDED THE LP DECEMBER 27 AND 28 IN L.A. THE STUDIO WAS JAMMED WITH SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE ... MANY WAITING IN LINE OUTSIDE TRYIN' TO GET IN. THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS WERE CUFTING AN ALBUM IN AN ADJOINING STUDIO SO SOME PEOPLE WERE CHECKING OUT BOTH SESSIONS AND THERE WAS A HAPPY FEELING ALL AROUND ... BUT THE MOST EXCITING THING WAS MY NEIGHBOR AND HIS KIDS AND FRIENDS IN THE STUDIO AUDIENCE. WE HAD SANDWICHES, SODA POP AND EVERYTHING FOR THEM, SO IT WAS A BALL. THESE THREE KIDS DANCED ON THE TOP BLEACHERS AND LED THE WHOLE CROWD JUMPIN' AND GROOVIN'! Q. I SUSPECT THE YOUNGSTERS SERVED AS A BAROMETER FOR YOUR PLAYING. RIGHT? A. THAT'S IT! UNKNOWN TO THEM, THEY WERE MY CUE CARDS. GOOD FEELING IS ALWAYS MY MUSICAL INTENT AND I'VE MAINTAINED SUPPORT FOR NEARLY EVERYTHING THAT COMMUNICATES TO THE YOUNGER SET. Q. OBVIOUSLY YOU GOT THE KIND OF SPIRIT YOU WANTED FOR THE DATE. WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ON LIVE SESSIONS? A. SOMEONE TOLD ME A STUDIO IS MADE FOR SILENCE NOT SOUND. BUT I WANT SOUND AND NOISE ... I CAN'T GET RAPPORT WITH A BLANK WALL. THAT'S THE ANSWER TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO ASK ME WHY I SOUND SO MUCH BETTER WHEN I'M WOF KING IN A CLUB WITH A CROWD. Q. WHAT ARE YOUR COMMENTS RELATIVE TO SOME OF THE SELECTIONS IN THE ALBUM? A. "HEY, LEROY". . . A REAL FUN THING! I DID THE CALLING AND BASSIST LEROY VINNEGAR ANSWERED. IT'S ONLY CO-INCIDENTAL THAT THE TITLE OF THE TUNE IS LEROY'S NAME. WE HAD ALL KINDS OF FUN CALLING EACH OTHER CLEAN AND DIRTY NAMES BEFORE DOING IT. I LIKE THE BEAT THAT COMES IN RIGHT AFTER WE STOP PLAYING AND THE DRUMS KEEP MOVING ... PART OF THE GROOVE THAT HAPPENED. "GIRL WATCHER". . . IT'S THE PEPSI COLA TV COMMERCIAL THEME-A GIRL WALKING DOWN THE BEACH AND THE GUYS WATCHING HER. KATZMAN IS ON TRUMPET AND PLAS PLAYS FINE FLUTE AS USUAL. THIS SONG ALONG WITH "YESTERDAYS" AND "ALL" GIVE A PLEASANT CONTRAST TO THE ALBUM. "WATERMELON MAN"... ALWAYS WANTED TO DO HERBIE HANCOCK'S TUNE. DONALD BYRD TOD ME A FUNNY . . . DONALD HAD MADE ONE OF HIS BIG RECORDS OUT OF SOMETHIN' HELD GOTTEN OUT OF MY TUNE, "A LITTLE 3/4 FOR GOD & CO." AND HERBIE WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO GET FOR A TUNE AND BYRD TOLD HIM, "LOOK MAN, DO WHAT I DO, GO OUT AND BUY ALL THE LES MCCANN RECORDS." "BUCKET O'GREASE". . . WE TRIED TO COME UP WITH A SORT OF HIP LINE ON TOP OF THE BASIC SETS OF BOOGALOO TYPE RHYTHM. LEE'S FLUGELHORN GIVES IT A GOOD SOUND. "RED TOP". . . IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS HERE ... A JAZZ STANDARD THAT'S OLD, BUT MOST YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE. "YESTERDAY". . . WE HAD A LINE AND I SAID LET'S REALLY BE WEIRD. NOTICE THERE'S A SLIGHT CLASH ... THE MELODY IS PLAYED HALF TEMPO AGAINST THE LINE. I LIKE IT! WE HAD A GROOVY SOUND WE DIDN'T EVEN EXPECT, BUT IT'S JUST THE WAY IT CAME OFF AT THE BRIDGE WHEN I COME IN. "ALL". . . WRITTEN BY THE SA ME GUY WHO WROTE "MORE", THE HIT FROM "MONDO CANE". AGAIN KATZMAN IS PLAYINGFLUEGELHORN. WHEN I LISTEN TO THE TAPE, I GET A THRILL WHEN WE REACH "ALL". I HOPE THEY LEAVE IT IN THE LAST OF THE LINE-UP OF THE TUNES BECAUSE IT COMES AT A PERFECT TIME. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SONG. I LOVE IT! I LOVE IFL! I LOVE IT!!! Q. WHAT'S YOUR EVALUATION OF THE MUSICAL OUTCOME OF THIS ALBUM? A. HERB, I'M REALLY HAPPY WITH THE SESSION. WE TRIED TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE MATERIAL AND YET FITTING IT TO THE LATIN BOOGALOO FORMULA. AND WE HAD MORE TIME TO REHEARSE THAN ON SOME PAST RECORDS SO WE WERE ALL DELIGHTFULLY SURPRISED WITH THE RESULTS THAT CERTAINLY EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS. YOU CAN'T CHANGE HISTORY SO, RIGHT NOW THIS IS OUR MOST EXCITING ALBUM. HERB WONG KJAZ, SAN FRANCISCO AND FM & THE ARTS MAGAZINE
