Liner Notes
WANTU WAZURI IN SWAHILI MEANS BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. IN THE NOW WORLD OF SWING AND SOUL, THE NAME OF EDDIE FISHER IS FAST BECOMING THE WANTU WAZURI WITH THE BEAUTIFUL GUITAR. IN THIS FAST, YOU-GOTTA-HAVE-A-GIMMICK WORLD, EDDIE PROVES "IT JUST AIN'T SO." HIS MAGIC FINGERS CHORD AND PROJECT SOUND AFTER SOUND OF FINE MODERN MUSIC FOR OTHER BEAUTIFUL AND NOTSO-BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. HE IS A PICTURE OF THE TIMES AND THE GENERATION THAT INHERITED THEM! YOU'LL KNOW HIM RIGHT AWAY ... HE'S THE COOL ONE, STANDING HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE PEOPLE OF THE NIGHT. HE WEARS RAP BROWN SPECS, AFRICAN DRESS AND A WORLD OF SOUL, AND AFTER LISTENING FOR ONLY A FEW MOMENTS YOU KNOW HE'S THE ONE ... HE'S THE IMPORTANT PART OF THE NEXTLEGEND ... THE LEGEND OF "BOSS STRING- PICKERS." GOOD GUITAR PLAYERS ARE NOT EASY TO COME BY. REASON: THE GUITAR CAN'T BE FAKED. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU CAN'T RIDE THE WIND ON SOMEONE ELSE'S BIOWING. CHARLIE CHRISTIAN, JOHNNY SMITH, BARNEY KESSELL, KENNY BURRELL AND WES MONTGOMERY ARE CLUB MEMBERS IN GUITAR'S "HALL OF FAME." THEY ALL WORE THE LABEL OF BOSS GUITAR, AND I'M SURE THEY'LL BE REMEMBERED FOR THEIR VARIED CONTRIBUTIONS TO MODERN MUSIC. BUT THE BOSSEST GUITAR OF 'EM ALL COULD BELONG TO THIS YOUNG MOVER FROM THE EAST . . . EAST ST. LOUIS, BY WAY OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS. EDWARD THOMAS FISHER WAS BORN MARCH 4, 1943, IN THE GUN-HOT TOWN OF LITTLE ROCK. HIS FATHER, WHO HAD-A FEELING FOR THE GUITAR BLUES, GOT EDDIE INVOLVED IN MUSIC AT THE AGE OF 10 AND FOR SIX YEARS THE KEEN YOUNG FISHER LISTENED, PLANNED, ABSORBED AND GOT IT TOGETHER. AND IN HIS 16TH YEAR HE PLANNED HIS ESCAPE FROM LITTLE ROCK COUNTRY! AFTER GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL HE MADE HIS MOVE. HIS FIRST STOP WAS MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, WHERE HE STUDIED WITH A FINE MUSICIAN AND FRIEND, ROBERT TALLEY-WHO SOME OF US REMEMBER FROM THE GREAT JIMMY LUNCEFORD BAND. MEMPHIS AND TALLEY MATURED THE YOUTHFUL FISHER AND HE WAS SOON AWAY AGAIN, THIS TIME ON A NATIONAL TOUR WITH THE SOLOMON BURKE BAND. (TRIPS SUCH AS THESE ARE KNOWN IN THE BUSINESS AS PAYING DUES.) EDDIE, AFTER LEAVING THE BURKE BAND IN PHILLEY, RETURNED TO MEMPHIS FOR MORE SEASONING AND THEN FINALLY TO ST. LOUIS, WHERE HE JOINED ALBERT (BLUES BOY) KING IN ANOTHER "DUES PAYING" MOVEMENT. AND FINALLY HEARING THE CALL OF JAZZ IN THE WILDERNESS HE HOOKED UP WITH LEO GOODEN WHO OWNED THE STAR-STUDDED 8LUE NOTE CLUB OUTSIDE EAST ST. LOUIS, AND A GROUP CALLED LEO'S FIVE. AND FROM THEN ON NICE THINGS BEGAN TO HAPPEN, AND FOR A WHILE, THE WORLD WAS COOL AND TOGETHER. THE DEATH OF LEO GOODEN, WHO HIMSELF WAS A VERY PROMISING JAZZ SINGER, BROUGHT THE END OF AN ERA FOR THE 8LUE NOTE CLUB AND LEO'S FIVE. OH, THE GROUP STILL HELD ON TO THE NAME BUT IT WASN'T THE SAME. AND SEEING THE WRITING ON THE WALL, EDDIE THIS TIME FORMED HIS OWN GROUP; AND HE BROUGHT SOMETHING ALONG WITH HIM THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED A LEGACY, LEFT BY THE LATE LEO GOODEN. DURING THE BIG MAN'S LIFE (GOODEN WEIGHED OVER 400 POUNDS) HE HAD GIVEN EACH OF THE MEMBERS OF HIS GROUP, LEO'S FIVE, A CUP. EACH MEMBER WAS SUPPOSED TO DO HIS THING IN MUSIC AS TO WHAT THE CUP MEANT. EDDIE'S WAS THE THIRD CUP, FIRST RECORDED A FEW MONTHS AGO BY A&R MAN OLIVER SAIN. A 45 SINGLE RECORDING, IT SOON SHOOK UP THE MUSIC SCENE ... AND EDDIE FISHER HAS ARRIVED AS PART OF THE WANTU WAZURI. ONE GREAT PLEASURE IN WRITING LINER NOTES IS THAT THE WRITER RECEIVES THE ALBUM MASTER BEFORE THE CONSUMER (THAT'S YOU) AND WHEN MY GOOD FRIENDS AT CADET RECORDS SENT MINE, THE DIE WAS CAST. THE NEIGHBORHOOD BECAME ALIVE WITH THE FANTASTIC SOUNDS FROM THIS ALBUM! A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE CONVERSATION ON MY RADIO SHOW, MIDNIGHT TO 6 A.M. ON KADI-FM, IS CONCERNING MY WORST-KEPT SECRET ... THE NEW EDDIE FISHER ALBUM ON CADET, STEP ONE TO THE BOSS-EST GUITAR OF 'EM ALL. SIDE ONE OPENS WITH SCORCHED EARTH, A SOUND AS TIMELY AS TODAY'S NEWSPAPER. HOPELESS AND DOWNTRODDEN, LOOKING OUT AT NOTHING BUT DEVASTATION AND DESPAIR, NO FUTURE, NO TOMORROW ... EDDIE'S GUITAR SAYS ALL OF THIS IN QUIET PROTEST OF THE NOW TIMES. BUT THE FINAL CHORDS RESOUND WITH THE FEELING OF MAYBE RAIN AND HOPE TODAY, TO QUENCH THE SCORCHED EARTH. AND WHILE YOU'RE THINKING OF HOW SAD AND HIW TRUE THIS TALE OF WOE, IN WALKS A DUDE NAMED ZEKE . . . YOUR BEST FRIEND; COOL, TOGETHER AND RESTORED TO LIFE BY THE PICKING CREATIVE FINGERS OF EDDIE, WHO NEVER LETS YOU FORGET THAT ZEKE IS NO SLOUCH. HE'S HEAVY AND MOST OF ALL HE'S YOUR MAIN MAN! EDDIE, ACCOMPANIED BY KENNY RICE ON DRUMS, PAUL JACKSON ON BASS AND BOBBY SELBY ON ORGAN, TAKES THE MOVEMENT SWINGINGLY FURTHER WITH A FOOT TAPPING SET ENTITLED SHUT UP AND THAT'S SPARKLING ADVICE WHICH WON'T HAVE TO BE REPEATED. YOU'LL SHUT UP INSIDE YOUR OWN THING AND DIG THIS ACTION ALL DOWN THE LINE. THE FINAL SET IS THE ONE THAT STARTED EARS TO POPPING IN THE MIDDLE WEST, THE THIRD CUP. THIS LEGACY LEFT BY THE LATE LEO GOODEN COMES ALIVE, BLOWING EVERYONE'S MIND WITH ITS NEW PACES AND CHANGES. THE THIRD CAP IS FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH SOUL AND YOU'LL SIP IT AND NURTURE IT FOR A TIME TO COME. SIDE TWO CONTINUES TO SHOW THE CHARISMA OF THIS FINE YOUNG GUITARIST'S ARRIVING SOUND. THE SET OPENS WITH A TUNE WRITTEN BY A LOCAL ST. LOUISIAN, OLIVER LAKE, RIGHTLY NAMED TWO BY TWO. EDDIE AND KENNY RIDE IN AWARE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING, KNOWING IT'S ALWAYS TOGETHER AND BETTER. THEY WADE ON THROUGH, JOINED BY BOBBY AND PAUL, A DYNAMIC .. MIDDLE CUT" RIGHTEOUSLY CALLED SHOO-BE-DOO-BE- DOO-BE-DO-DA-DAY WHICH WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO BUY TWO OF THESE LP'S (DO IT! DO IT!), ONE TO PLAY AND ONE TO OWN. AND IF YOU'RE STILL UNCERTAIN, THE CLOSING CURTAIN OF SHADOW OT YOUR SMILE, WHICH I'M SURE IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES. WILL PICK UP ALL LOOSE ENDS. AND THAT, DEAR LOVER OF THE MODERN SOUNDS, IS EDDIE FISHER ... NOT THE ONE ONCE MARRIED TO LIZ TAYLOR!! THIS IS THE ONE WITH THE BOSS GUITAR WHO DOESN'T MAKE IT SOUND LIKE A HORN; THIS IS THE ONE THAT KEEPS THE SISTERS AND BROTHERS JAMMING THE DOORS OF MOTHERS, THE EAST ST. LOUIS JAZZ CENTER (HOME BASE OF EDDIE). EDDIE FISHER, PART OF THE NOW PEOPLE ... THE WANTU WAZURI. BUT ENOUGH OF THIS RAP ... TAKE HIM HOME, PUT ON THE STEREO AND FORGET IT! OH ... PLEASE PAY FOR THE LP! LEO CHEARS "THE MAN IN THE RED VEST" KADI-FM, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI RECORDED AT: SAICO STUDIO, ST. LOUIS, MO., FEBRUARY, 1969 PRODUCED BY: OLIVER SAIN RECORDING ENGINEER: OLIVER SAIN COVER PHOTOGRAPHY: JERRY GRIFFITH ALBUM DESIGN: JERRY GRIFFITH CHESS/JANUS RECORDS, 1301 AVENUE OF THE AMERICAS, NEW YORK, N.Y. 10019
