LESS OBVIOUS: BOBBI IS AN ANGEL WITH AN APPETITE. A VERY HUNGRY BLACK ANGEL, BORN TO SEE AFAR, AND GIVEN TO FLY WITH HER IMAGININGS. YET WITHAL, SHE'S A VERY SMALL, VERY YOUNG PERSON. WIDE OPEN, BUT FAR FROM VULNERABLE. PROTECTED FROM THE WORLD BY HER TRUST IN ITS NEGLECTED GOODNESS. I'D SAY THAT SHE BELIEVES IN INNOCENCE, AS AN EVOCABLE ELEMENT OF THE TRANSCENDENTAL DESIGN WHICH, IN HER PRIVATE FAITH, MAKES OF HER VOICE, ITS INSTRUMENT. HENCE I AM SURE THAT SHE THINKS THAT ANYONE CAN DO WHAT SHE HAS DONE. JUST FIND THE HORN FOR WHICH YOU HAVE FEELING, AND CAN HANDLE. STUDY AND PRACTICE. THEN INFORM YOUR FRIENDS THAT YOU'RE LEAVING FOR NEW YORK TO GET A RECORDING CONTRACT. HOP A JET, ZERO IN ON THE AGING APPLE; AND, OF COURSE!�IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS YOU'LL BE SIGNED AND SOUGHT AFTER. BETWEEN ENGAGEMENTS, YOU'LL CUT AN ALBUM. SEE IT CLIMB THE JAZZ CHARTS. RECORD ANOTHER ONE, AND WATCH IT TAKE OFF. AND KEEP ON GROWING, KEEP ON LEARNING, KEEP ON MOVING. SHE DID IT. SHE'S STILL DOING IT. THIS IS HER THIRD ALBUM, ON WHICH SHE MAKES YET ANOTHER DEBUT. AS A SINGER. THAT'S BOBBI HUMPHREY SINGING WITH HER OWN OVERDUBBED FLUTE TRACKS ON JUST A LOVE CHILD AND BABY'S GONE. THE WAY IT HAPPENED, SHE PICKED UP ON DONALD BYRD'S VOCALS ON HIS CURRENT ALBUM. THEN, GIGGING WITH BYRD AT THE LIGHTHOUSE, THERE WAS THIS SCRAP OF CONVERSATION AS SHE LATER TOLD ME: "WELL, DONALD, IF YOU CAN DO IT, SO CAN I." SO BYRD'S PRODUCER, LARRY MIZELL, WHO WROTE AND ARRANGED HER MATERIAL, ADDED LYRICS. AND SHE SANG.I ASKED HER IF SHE'D DONE MUCH SINGING. "OH, NO. NOT AT ALL," SHE SAID. SCHOOL CHORUS, YES; BUT NEVER PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER AS A SOLOIST. DOUBT IS FOR THE DOUBTERS. WHAT BOBBI WILL DO, BOBBI CAN DO. AND SHE CAN SING, YES SHE CAN! HER VOICE IS SMALL AND SWEET AND PURE. A TRUE VOICE, AS SHE WAS SURE IT WOULD BE. REMARKABLE I THOUGHT SO AND SAID AS MUCH. BUT SHE CHUCKLED COMFORTABLY, AS IF TO HUMOR ME. SHE DOESN'T SEE HERSELF AS BEING REMARKABLE. ABOUT THAT, ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT CERTAIN RARE HUMAN BEINGS FUNCTION ON A SEPARATE PLANE OF HONESTY AND SERENITY. SOME SEE THEREIN THE NEXT PIECE OF THE EVOLUTION PUZZLE... IT'S ONLY BEEN TWO OR SO YEARS SINCE BOBBI HUMPHREY LEFT SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY TO SEE WHAT NEW YORK WAS ALL ABOUT. SINCE THEN, SHE HAS PERFORMED IN THE VERY BEST COMPANY. HER FIRST WEEK END AWAY FROM TEXAS, SHE DID A GIG WITH DUKE ELLINGTON. "I'D ALWAYS WANTED TO MEET HERBIE MANN," SHE TOLD ME. SHE FOUND OUT WHERE MANN WAS PLAYING, WENT BACK STAGE, AND ASKED IF SHE COULD SIT IN. WHEN HE WAS SURE THAT SHE MEANT IF, HE LET HER. AND THAT IS HOW SHE HAPPENED TO GO ON TOUR WITH HIM SHORTLY THEREAFTER. "HUBERT LAWS YOU COULD ALMOST SAY THAT I IDOLIZED HIM, EVEN WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL." NOW SHE COUNTS HIM AS HER FRIEND, AND AS A MENTOR WHO HAS TAUGHT HER GENEROUSLY FROM HIS OWN VAST KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR COMMON INSTRUMENT. BUT SHE SAYS VERY FIRMLY THAT HER STYLE IS ENTIRELY HER OWN, HOWEVER MUCH TECHNIQUE SHE'S LEARNED FROM OTHERS. THE STUDIO IS A GRAVITATIONAL FIELD APART, AND HERE SHE ATTRACTS OUTSTANDING BACKUP PEOPLE, MOSTLY HAVING STAR STANDING ON THEIR OWN. CONSIDER THE CREDITS ON THIS ALBUM. THE KEYBOARD WORK BY JERRY PETERS IS ELEGANT AND DECISIVE. CHUCK RAINEY SHARES THE BASS ASSIGNMENT WITH RON BROWN; BOTH ARE SENSITIVE TO THE BALANCE OF LOW REGISTER AGAINST THE HIGH OF THE SOLO INSTRUMENT. DAVID T. WALKER AND JOHN ROWIN PROVIDE RICH AND VARIED GUITAR VOICINGS. AND FONCE MIZELL LAVISHES DOUBLE INPUT OF TRUMPET AND CLAVINET. WHILE FRED PERREN GRACES THE TEXTURE OF THE SCORE WITH PERFECTLY JOINED SYNTHESIZER TRACKS. THE SUM OF THESE PARTS, MEASURED IN MOTION BY HARVEY MASON, DRUMS, KING FERRISON, CONGAS, AND STEPHANIE SPRUILL, PERCUSSION. BACKING VOICES ARE THOSE OF FRED PERREN, FONCE MIZELL, AND LARRY MIZELL. AGAINST THIS HEAVY SHOW OF STUDIO STRENGTH, BOBBI HUMPHREY POSTS HER FLUTE AND VOICE WITH THE LIQUESCENT CLARITY, THE POIGNANCY AND THE WIT, AND THE POSITIVE ASSURANCE OF THE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN WHO IS BOTH NATURAL ARTIST AND CONSCIOUS VIRTUOSO. AND THERE IS THAT OTHER PHENOMENON, STEVIE WONDER, WHO SAID THAT HE WOULD "COME IN AND DO A SONG" FOR BOBBI HUMPHREY. THAT'S SUCH A STATEMENT IN ITSELF, NEEDING NO WORDS OF MINE TO IMPRESS ITS MEANING... SHE'S PACKED BY NOW, AND ON HER WAY TO MONTREUX. FOR THE JAZZ FESTIVAL, EUROPE'S MEETING OF MASTERS, AN INTERNATIONAL SOLSTICE IN THE JAZZ YEAR. BY INVITATION ONLY, TO THE KNOWN BEST TALENT IN THE WORLD. AND WHATEVER ELSE SHE TAKES ALONG, TWO ESSENTIAL ITEMS WILL BE IN HER LUGGAGE. HER FLUTE. AND A BOTTLE (AND A SPARE) OF TABASCO HOT SAUCE, WITHOUT WHICH NO TEXAS REARED MUSICIAN FEELS ENTIRELY SECURE OUT THERE IN THE BIG BLAND WORLD. MONTREUX IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL FOR MANY MUSICIANS.
